Today I was able to finally get my much-needed massage. My back is a pool of knots and since I’ve been suffering in silent pain for so long, I figured it was time to get back to the massage routine and hopefully get some relief. That, and I’m a massage junkie. It’s just nice to have someone pamper you from head to toe and that’s what they do.
Since I’m currently away from home, I had to find a decently priced spa that was close to my apartment and it had to come with good reviews. Luckily I live near a busy street with lots of businesses so I found Body Sense Holistic Spa. Their spa is located right in the middle of Coral Way, and with ample street parking, it wasn’t difficult to find at all. If anyone has lived in Miami you’ll know the traffic is insane and if you don’t know where you’re going you might as well get off the road.
I was greeted by my masseuse Monica, who is very sweet and nice. I had to fill out the usual paperwork, but everything was looking good so far. I didn’t have to wait long and she took me into the back room. The place is pretty small but very nicely decorated. They definitely take after the “zen” or Asian environment and of course, they were playing that smooth, relaxing music that every spa plays. Honestly, I don’t really get anything from that audio experience, it kind of distracts me sometimes, especially when the birds start chirping, but maybe it works for some people.
She asked me some questions about my health and explained the procedure to me and then left so I could change. I was surprised that they didn’t have a changing area for customers. I had to change in the room and there wasn’t a designated area to put my clothes, well, I guess that was the point of the basket she told me to put my purse in, but still. All the other spas I’ve been to have a changing/shower area, so that was a disappointment.
Once I was situated she came in and started her massage. I got the “Renew Mom” package which is basically their Zen Fusion Massage with a Mini Facial, which they had going on for only $125 for May. It’s moderately priced, but with prices in Miami, I think that’s pretty good. They have a whole list of services they offer, which is pretty awesome and I’m pretty specific and simple, just give me a deep tissue massage to relieve my aches and pains and I’m good. Their zen massage had some deep tissue aspects in it, as well as some stretching, which wasn’t that bad.
While she was massaging me, she didn’t ask about the pressure or how everything felt for me, but otherwise it was great. She massaged every area and did some light stretching of all my joints. It was definitely a different experience. She also used some kind of lotion instead of the traditional massage oil that most spas use, which I guess is nice since it doesn’t leave you all oily afterward. She also added some other lotion which had a soothing effect and it smelled like Tiger Balm, which is was nice because it was very relieving on my back and I might try some on my back when it really hurts. She definitely put her whole body into it when she was helping me stretch, at one point, she was on the table with me, it was crazy! But in a good way.
Next she did the facial, which was great since I hadn’t had one in such a long time. It was a mini facial, where she used some cremes and cleansers, some of which really stung, but I guess that just meant my pores needed to be cleaned really bad. I wish she would have used the steam treatment over my face, but I think that’s only with a face mask. Overall, it was a great facial and it left my face feeling very smooth and clear afterward. I really loved the brush she used to put the creme on my face, it was so smooth and cooling, very nice.
I’d have to say it was a good experience and I will most likely be coming back. I still have a lot of work to do on my back, and Monica suggested trying Electro-Stimulation therapy in addition to a deep tissue massage. She was quite surprised at the amount of knots in my back, I’m telling you, you’d have to feel it to believe it, so she gave me some tips for stretching and such since I spend a lot of my time at the desk or studying.
