A SACRED OATH
A FALLEN ANGEL
A FORBIDDEN LOVE
Romance was not part of Nora Grey's plan. She's never been particularly attracted to the boys at her school, no matter how hard her best friend, Vee, pushes them at her. Not until Patch comes along. With his easy smile and eyes that seem to see inside her, Patch draws Nora to him against her better judgment.
But after a series of terrifying encounters, Nora's not sure whom to trust. Patch seems to be everywhere she is and seems to know more about her than her closest friends. She can't decide whether she should fall into his arms or run and hide. And when she tries to seek some answers, she finds herself near a truth that is way more unsettling than anything Patch makes her feel.
For she is right in the middle of an ancient battle between the immortal and those that have fallen - and, when it comes to choosing sides, the wrong choice will cost Nora her life.
I heard a lot of great things about this book and people were going pretty crazy about it on the internet so I had to give this a read. I have to say that it kept me wanting more and more as the book progressed. Becca Fitzpatrick sure does know how to write a good mystery/suspense story, which is what this book is mostly about. I expected another paranormal love story, but even though the main characters fall in love with each other, the story focuses more on the mystery of Patch and why Nora is so drawn to him.
Throughout the book you’re left wondering, “what is really going on?” and “is he dangerous or is there someone else who is out to get Nora?”. Even though you know from the start that Patch is clearly a fallen angel, you don’t get the real picture until you get deep into the book, but it’s not like Becca filled the rest of the story with fluff, there was so much action, suspense, and mystery that I could barely put it down. It was a little confusing, trying to figure out the story behind the fallen angels and angels in general, but everything was pieced together nicely and it was very well-written.
Probably the only downfall was that there wasn’t enough romance. You kind of get a sense of why Nora falls for Patch, how she’s instantly drawn to him because he’s the mysterious, handsome new guy, but you never really understand why and how Patch falls for Nora. Even when they are together, yes, there are some heated moments, but nothing sweet or romantic like you would read in other books. I don’t really like how they fell in love and I thought that could have used some more work because even though I like the idea of “love at first sight”, if you’re going to have a relationship, there needs to be some kind of substance built from that first sight love, which wasn’t really elaborated on at all. I definitely wouldn’t go into this thinking that you’ll fall for Patch or swoon over the moments he & Nora share together, I enjoyed the dark, twisted, and suspenseful parts of the book much better. The ending was kind of obvious though, given how their relationship is, but how everything turned out was a good read. Other than that, it was a great book and I can’t wait to read Crescendo.
