Author Interview: Jus Accardo

October 29, 2011 Interviews 3

I’m so thrilled to be interviewing one of this year’s up & coming, very amazing authors, Jus Accardo!

I am head-over-heels in love with her debut novel, Touch, (review) and today we get to take a peek into her awesome brain as I ask her some questions about the book, characters, and what kind of super powers she likes.

Jus Accardo is the author of YA paranormal romance and urban fantasy fiction. A native New Yorker, she lives in the middle of nowhere with her husband, three dogs, and sometimes guard bear, Oswald. Her first book, Touch, is due out in November 2011 from Entangled Publishing. She is represented by Kevan Lyon of Marsal Lyon Literary Agency.

1. How did you come up with the idea of Touch?

It seriously came from a random flash in my weird little brain (these
things happen quite often). I was on line waiting for coffee and I got
this scene in my head. This girl is being chased through the wood. She was
barefoot and everything she touches shrivels up and dies. Yes, Kale was a
chick for three chapters. Then he and Dez swapped places 🙂

2. Did you think of Deznee’s name first or the Denezen corp because,
clearly, there’s a relation!? LOL!!

Actually, the Denazen Cooperation originated in a trilogy I wrote five
years ago. Some of the characters were pulled from those books and it’s
set in the same world. I’d love to revisit it at some point, but at the
moment it’s not fit for my dogs to read 😀

3. I simple adore Deznee’s character. Why did you decide to write her as a
rebellious, feisty teenage girl instead of the typical naive, nice girl

I grew up pretty fast. Naive was something I outgrew before hitting high
school, so I’m not sure I could have realistically pulled it off. Plus,
Dez had her own voice and personality right from the get go. For the first
three chapters it fit a little weird because I was writing it on Kale
(having started with their roles reversed) but once I swapped them, it
came as natural as breathing.

4. Who is you favorite character in the book and why?

Ooo to play favorites… I’m not sure. I love Dez and Kale, of course, but
I have some serious love for Alex, too. He’s just got that vibe, ya know?
He’s got all these good intentions that end up twisted because of the bad
decisions he makes.

5. If you had a special “Six” ability, what would it be and why?

I used to think I’d like to read minds…but after some thought, I realize
that would just be bad. I’m an animal lover, so maybe the ability to talk
to animals. That would be awesome! Or it might be cool to be a
telekinetic. I could make my coffee from the other room without leaving
the computer!

6. Do you believe there will be people like the “Sixes” in the future?

I think we humans have enormous untapped potential. We use such a small
amount of our brains… God only knows what we’d be capeable of if we used
all of it. So, yeah. I think it’s totally possible.
