Rule #3: Don't stare at invisible faeries.
Aislinn has always seen faeries. Powerful and dangerous, they walk hidden in mortal world. Aislinn fears their cruelty—especially if they learn of her Sight—and wishes she were as blind to their presence as other teens.
Rule #2: Don't speak to invisible faeries.
Now faeries are stalking her. One of them, Keenan, who is equal parts terrifying and alluring, is trying to talk to her, asking questions Aislinn is afraid to answer.
Rule #1: Don't ever attract their attention.
But it's too late. Keenan is the Summer King who has sought his queen for nine centuries. Without her, summer itself will perish. He is determined that Aislinn will become the Summer Queen at any cost—regardless of her plans or desires.
Suddenly none of the rules that have kept Aislinn safe are working anymore, and everything is on the line: her freedom; her best friend, Seth; her life; everything.
Faerie intrigue, mortal love, and the clash of ancient rules and modern expectations swirl together in Melissa Marr's stunning 21st century faery tale.
I loved this book. I didn’t know what to expect going into this book because I haven’t read any fairy books before, but I am highly intrigued by Melissa Marr’s world and characters. I always love when a character knows who she is and where she stands going into the book, and Aislinn is just that. She’s not a pushover and her interactions with the fey were a delight to read.
Marr does a great job of incorporating many of the fey folklore and tales into the story while adding a modern twist to it so that readers can enjoy it. Each of the characters brought their own unique piece to book and I can’t get over how well it was written. Kennan is king, therefore he’s arrogant, confident, and charming, but he’s also a good king who wants peace for his kingdom. It’s very interesting seeing his quest for his queen unravel and learning about all the women he has had to get through until he finds The One. The Winter Queen is your typical bad guy and in my mind I pictured her somewhat like that Queen from The Chronicles of Narnia, which I loved.
There’s not a lot of action, but you get a decent amount of information about how all these fey and people are interrelated and what their fates will be. Marr gives quite a dramatic twist at the end that you will simply relish over. I know I did!
As for Aislinn’s best friend Seth, let me just say their relationship had me on pins and needles one moment and swooning the next. Marr raises the bar on hot and steamy YA romance with these characters and I couldn’t get enough of Aislinn and Seth. I really loved how their relationship played out once Kennan came into the picture and was surprised at how it all turned out.
I am so addicted to this book, it’s not even funny. If you love romance, paranormal drama, and a determined, strong female lead, then this is your book!
