At Penford High School, Britney Taylor is the queen bee. She dates whomever she likes, rules over her inner circle of friends like Genghis Khan, and can ruin anyone’s life with a snap of perfectly manicured fingers. Just ask the unfortunate few who have crossed her. For April Bowers, Britney is the answer to her prayers. April is so unpopular, kids don’t know she exists. One lunch spent at Britney’s table, and April is basking in the glow of popularity. But Britney’s friendship comes with a high price tag, and April decides it’s not worth the cost. Inspiring and empowering, this is the story of one girl who decides to push back.
As a typical “Mean Girls” kind of book, this one had me thoroughly entertained. Amy Holder’s writing is quite comedic and her characters were fun and relatable.
We all know the story about a girl who makes into the “It Crowd” only to learn it’s not what it seems and discovers positive things about herself, while finding a way to “take down” the reigning “Queen of High School”.
I loved April, very funny, witty, and utterly obsessed with her boobs (as I kind of am, although I’m rather blessed as she was not, LOL!). Britney was also a true mean girl, but with reasons, since her family history isn’t all rainbows and sunshine. I love how she was able to turn herself into a popular kid, and you feel for her even though you hate her.
I honestly loved this book, the characters, and Amy’s writing. Not only is it a quick read, it’s funny and memorable. Just wait until you see those Lipstick Lawbreakers, you’ll love them! I couldn’t get enough of this book. Well done, Amy!
