One Line: Even better and more exciting than the first, Merrick doesn’t disappoint with Shift.

About the Book: Devastated by a terrible loss, Chase is trying to balance the life he’s been left with, a family he’s still getting to know, and power he never thought he’d have. He doesn’t understand why the Goddess has named him the Protector and granted him two gifts: the Mark, a tattoo that now covers his back, and the ring. But between getting interrogated by the Circle and psychic attacks from Riley, the Mark is the least of his concern. There’s a demon inside Rayna that’s fighting to be released, and it’s not her inner witch. It’s something else–a monster threatening to tear her apart.

As Chase struggles to control his magic, his enemies are closing in. Everyone has staked a claim on his ring, and destroying it may be his only chance to stop Riley. But Chase must decide if stopping him is worth risking the lives of everyone he cares about, or if protecting the ring will be enough to save his world.

Merrick’s writing continues to capture and entertain me with this thrilling sequel to his Protector series. Shift is filled with drama, action, romance (finally), and a slew of even more awesome paranormal creatures. Everything I loved and enjoyed in Exiled was brought forth in Shift along with a ton of new plot twists. In this book, Chase deals with his loss, learning to trust and rely on those he never thought he would, and discovering his role in the epic battle between Riley and the paranormal world. Rayna comes to terms with her demonic side and her relationship with Chase grows and develops because of it. The threat of Riley’s power continues to grow and Chase has to deal with some pretty crazy creatures who are out to get him.

As with Exiled, Shift is also pretty much character-driven. Much of the story revolves around Rayna dealing with her demonic side and Chase discovering that he holds more powers than he realized. As they learn of ways to stop Riley’s quest for ultimate power, they team up with unlikely allies and I loved reading about their developing relationships. Probably my favorite moments were with Chase and Vincent. Those two have such a hate for each other, and even though there are some intense scenes, it was fun seeing it all play out.

If you read Exiled, you’ll know that the romance was seriously lacking in that book. Thankfully, Merrick teases us with some development in Chase and Rayna’s relationship at pivotal points throughout the story. He does a great job of showing just how much they truly care for one another and how deep and meaningful their relationship is.

Shift is basically a build up of what’s to come in the next book in the series, Release, but I loved that it wasn’t just a “space filler”. Shift has actual key moments that are crucial to the plot and development of the characters and I wasn’t bored as I tend to get with a lot of sequels. It takes you a step further into the world of demonic creatures and shows you some that you never dreamed of. The world that Merrick has created is so riveting and exciting, I really can’t wait to see how it all progresses!
