Today was a very trying and exhausting day, to say the least.
Having decided to give toilet training a try at just 21 months (due to the fact that I’ll be away for school when BG2 is around 2 years old with no clue what schedule will be like), I knew I would be in for a lot of “little accidents”. Well, I got a ton of that, as well as a nice exercise sprinting back and forth from one room of the house to the bathroom. I don’t remember exactly how I trained BG1, but I do know that she took to it very quickly, so I had high hopes that BG2 would be just as adept.
BG2 has been showing all the signs: showing interest in the toilet (especially when someone is on it), letting us know when she pees or poops, and has been quick to get us to change her diaper when its soiled. I definitely had my mind and my heart set on giving this thing a try since I’m home for a few weeks.
Here’s how the day went:
8:45 AM – Everyone woke up around the same time, and I immediately grabbed BG2 off the bed and placed her on the toilet for the “morning routine”. She was still a bit sleepy-eyed and didn’t know what was going on, but I stood my ground and kept her entertained and alert. Sadly, after about 10 minutes, there was no action and I had to relent. My spirits were still hopeful though and I happily put her in one of her newly purchased (and cleaned) Dora undies.
9: 05 AM – BG2 promptly peed right through those undies and left a nice puddle on my bedroom floor (thank goodness we have hardwoord floors). She then continued to sprinkle here and there for the next hour, going through about 5 pairs of underwear, at which point I decided to forego them entirely and just let her sit on towels when needed (to save the furniture and her tush, of course).
10:00 AM – 1:30 PM – I monitored BG2 like a hawk and whenever she showed the slightest bit of wanting to pee, like standing insanely still or paying extra attention to that area, I swooped her up and planted her on the potty. Each time, however, was a fail as she swiftly hopped right down after a few minutes and continued on her with her play. She did manage to leave me quite a few puddles throughout the day, particularly a few minutes after my attempts at getting her to use the toilet. And yes, I looked longingly at that pile of diapers in the corner and almost gave into the urge of putting it on her a few times. But, I held strong!
1:30 – 3:30 PM – Naptime! A bit of reprise and rest, although I still watched her like a hawk because who knows what happens during naptime!
3:30 – 5:00 PM – I plopped her right on the toilet after she woke from her nap, but to no avail. I was expecting some accidents, but she didn’t have the urge to go I guessed.
5:05 PM – Ahhhh!!! The golden moment! She urgently alerted me to the fact that she was about to pee by pointing down there and giving me that “you better get me to the toilet now before you have to wipe up another puddle” look! Luckily, she held out until I planted her on the potty, and she happily peed away! I was ecstatic! Praises, clapping, and joy abounded! Oh, she knew she did a good job!
After that moment, I felt confident in letting her wear her new undies again and she did me proud by alerting me not one, but TWO more times that when she had to pee (after dinner and before bedtime). Go BG2!!!!!
I was beginning to feel a bit frazzled midday, but right now I couldn’t be more proud of her. I think she’s really starting to learn that we have to go in the toilet and she was quick to run to the bathroom herself, while calling me, if she even had an inkling of wanting to go.
Not bad for the first day of potty-training, if I do say so myself!
Here’s hoping to an even better Day Two!
