Title: Nobody But Us [Goodreads][Amazon]
Author: Kristen Halbrook
Publisher: HarperTeen
Format: eARC
Pages: 272
Release Date: January 29, 2013
In My Opinion: Worth a try!
One Line: Not as exciting or riveting as it claims to be, but not a bad story at all.

About the Book: They’re young. They’re in love. They’re on the run.

Zoe wants to save Will as much as Will wants to save Zoe. When Will turns eighteen, they decide to run away together. But they never expected their escape to be so fraught with danger….

When the whole world is after you, sometimes it seems like you can’t run fast enough.

Nobody But Us, told in alternating perspectives from Will and Zoe, is an unflinching novel, in turns heartbreaking and hopeful, about survival, choices, and love…and how having love doesn’t always mean that you get a happy ending. Described as “beautiful, heartbreaking, and exhilarating” by Kody Keplinger, author of The DUFF, Nobody But Us will prove irresistible to fans of Nina Lacour, Jenny Han, and Sara Zarr.

I know you’ll see a ton of reviews saying they were disappointed in this book, I know I did, but I think it was because I’ve seen all that, I went into this book with little-to-no expectations and was left rather content (except for that ending, which was expected, but sad). After reading the synopsis, you’d expect a few high-speed chases, a couple hold-your-breath moments, and two crazy kids in love; but I’d have to say that although it has a little bit of each of those, it was a bit lackluster in the delivery.

You pretty much jump right into Will and Zoe on the run and as they take their life-changing road trip, they look back at what got them to this point, how they met and fell for each other, and you learn some important things about their troubled pasts. They’re both pretty damaged, but they’re also good kids who just want a better life for themselves, to be happy. Will is trying to find some stability in his life after being shuffled around in the foster care system and he’s deeply in love with Zoe. Although Will does have a lot of issues, I’d say his character was my favorite of the two and I definitely sympathized with him. Zoe suffers from a violent father and it’s pretty clear she’s a bit immature and timid. Even though I understand why she is the way she is, I couldn’t connect with her at all and was often annoyed and frustrated with her. She definitely did a lot of things that I didn’t care for.

As I said, you’d expect a bit more action and intense moments, but most of the story is of Will and Zoe driving and contemplating their lives and their future. They are always on edge, always worried about getting caught, but I never sensed that danger that the characters felt. While the pacing wasn’t bad, I think it just flowed, and that’s it. No real ups and downs. It wasn’t until close to the end that things really heated up. With that said, I liked this enough and it was worth my time. Yes, the characters frustrated me some of the time, but I could see where the author was coming from and her writing was very well done. I was definitely interested and kept reading until the end, albeit, in a blase way.

Nobody But Us is a touching story with a somber tone throughout the whole book. The characters are flawed and their fate is pretty tragic, but seeing how they get there was a fun ride. As long as you go in with a level head and no expectations, I think you’ll like this one.

Haha, yea, I think if it wasn’t for the tour, after seeing all the reviews, I would’ve passed too. It’s okay, to say the least.
