One Line: A unique and fun take on grim reapers and risking afterlife and death for love.
About the Book: Love or Death? A simple question really. The choice seems obvious. But. What if you never knew love, what if your life was spent just trying to survive? What if you knew your fate before you were fully grown?
And then you died.
And you were given another chance. A better chance.
This new life depended upon one thing: your job. And so you agreed. You thought it would be simple. You thought it would be cut and dry.
It never is.
And now you are left holding the fate of someone else in the palm of your hand and you have to make the ultimate choice.
Love or Death?
Recalled is not your typical afterlife/grim reaper tale, let me assure you. Cambria’s own take on grim reapers, death, and afterlife is very unique and refreshing. She also adds some flare to it, which I really liked. I’m not sure how I feel about them being called escorts, because when I hear that word I think of THAT kind of escort, but the premise is still pretty cool and creepy at times, in a good way.
I’d have to say my favorite character is Piper’s best friend, Frankie. She is freaking hilarious and I loved every scene she was in. She made me laugh so many times! She was always there for Piper, had a quick wit, and exuded confidence like no other. Piper was a pretty interesting character, although there’s not much in the way of character development, but I understood the reason because she was the reason why Dex changes. You do learn early on what makes her so special and why the Grim Reaper wants her so much, too, so there’s that. Dex is more of the show-runner though, and undergoes the most amount of change and development. He was very dejected in the beginning, but things moved along at a steady pace for him and you see his personality and rationale change as he develops feelings for Piper.
All the characters were pretty interesting, really. I’d definitely like to get to know the actual Grim Reaper a bit more and learn his secrets.
Overall, it was a quick and easy read, very light and fun. Recalled is a very unique and sweet tale of love and the afterlife. Everything flowed together nicely and the pacing was great. I wasn’t too sold on the love factor because even though they went through some crazy “accidents” and moments together, I didn’t really get the “true love” feeling from these two. They definitely really liked each other, yes, but I wouldn’t describe it as love, at least, not yet. I also kind of saw a lot of things coming, but I liked watching it all play out. With that aside, I really enjoyed this one and can’t wait to read more from this series!
