One Line: A fantastic sci-fi thriller with one hell of a fierce female lead.

About the Book: Mila 2.0 is the first book in an electrifying sci-fi thriller series about a teenage girl who discovers that she is an experiment in artificial intelligence.

Mila was never meant to learn the truth about her identity. She was a girl living with her mother in a small Minnesota town. She was supposed to forget her past —that she was built in a secret computer science lab and programmed to do things real people would never do.

Now she has no choice but to run—from the dangerous operatives who want her terminated because she knows too much and from a mysterious group that wants to capture her alive and unlock her advanced technology. However, what Mila’s becoming is beyond anyone’s imagination, including her own, and it just might save her life.

Mila 2.0 is Debra Driza’s bold debut and the first book in a Bourne Identity–style trilogy that combines heart-pounding action with a riveting exploration of what it really means to be human. Fans of I Am Number Four will love Mila for who she is and what she longs to be—and a cliffhanger ending will leave them breathlessly awaiting the sequel.

I’m really getting into the whole sci-fi genre and loving the action, of which, there is plenty in Mila 2.0. I’ll admit the beginning is a bit slow and complacent, but it does set up the scene for the explosive second two-thirds of the book, which I loved. Debra does an amazing job at creating a fierce android with a human heart and soul. Once the action started to kick in, it pretty much doesn’t stop, and I loved it! You never know who exactly are the good guys or the bad guys in this.

As Mila grapples with the truth of her existence while running from those who wish to use and harm her, her character grows up pretty fast and she has to make decisions on a whim as a life hangs in the balance. Lets not forget that in her mind, she’s only known herself to be this average teenage girl; then her life turns upside down, she slowly discovers exactly how awesome her body is and what it can do, and she had to recall dark and terrible truths from her past as she puts the pieces of her life back together. Mila starts out pretty helpless, but becomes a strong character who uses what her enemies would call a flaw as a strength and I loved that about her. She is struggling with who she really is – is she just an android or is some part of her really human? A lot of emotions come into play, which you wouldn’t think would, and it plays into the story very nicely as Mila learns what truly makes her special.

Need a little romance? Well, there’s some of that in here too. A mysterious boy name Hunter gives Mila all the feels and I couldn’t help but like the guy myself. There’s not much to say about him though, as their relationship is short-lived and his history isn’t delved into, but I’m pretty sure his story ties in deeply with Mila’s history and there’s just something I can’t shake about him. We shall see!

Another guy named Logan plays an integral part in this story as well. Logan is very much a sweetheart and I really liked him. Although there isn’t so much in the way of romance between these two, you definitely see something there, something that could be more, and by the end, things are all up in the air so who knows what way Debra will sway.

As for the bad guys, you’ve got the secret government agency that created her and a team of black market bandits who want to use her in evil ways. As they push Mila to her limits and shows her things she never thought she’d see, you’ll definitely be rooting for her and hoping she’ll kick some bad guy ass.

Mila 2.0 stands out as a fantastic story filled with action, emotion, and intrigue. While there are some blase moments here and there, overall, it was as stellar debut and introduction to what I’m sure will be a great trilogy. I can’t wait to read the second book!

I think the conflict between whether she’s full android or part human/part android would be something interesting to explore. Plus, I do want to know what all the fuss over her is about! It sounds like she’s something special – and (apart from her being an android), I’m sure there’s a bigger reason why… and I’d like to know what it is!
