Title: Another Little Piece [Goodreads][Amazon]
Author: Kate Karyus Quinn
Release Date: June 11, 2013
In My Opinion: Worth a try!
One Line: The horror/thriller aspect was the best part of an otherwise confusing and choppy book.
About the Book: The spine-tingling horror of Stephen King meets an eerie mystery worthy of Sara Shepard’s Pretty Little Liars series in Kate Karyus Quinn’s haunting debut.
On a cool autumn night, Annaliese Rose Gordon stumbled out of the woods and into a high school party. She was screaming. Drenched in blood. Then she vanished.
A year later, Annaliese is found wandering down a road hundreds of miles away. She doesn’t know who she is. She doesn’t know how she got there. She only knows one thing: She is not the real Annaliese Rose Gordon.
Now Annaliese is haunted by strange visions and broken memories. Memories of a reckless, desperate wish . . . a bloody razor . . . and the faces of other girls who disappeared. Piece by piece, Annaliese’s fractured memories come together to reveal a violent, endless cycle that she will never escape—unless she can unlock the twisted secrets of her past.
Another Little Piece was, yet again, one of those books that I wanted to like more than I actually did. It was decent, don’t get me wrong. And it was different. I definitely enjoyed the mystery and thriller part of it. Seriously, when you see just WHAT Annaliese really is and how she came to be, that part was pretty awesome. The whole part of her re-integrating with her family and friends was a little disjointed, which made it hard for me to connect with all the characters.
One thing that really bugged me was that I didn’t really get what was going on. The author does, SLOWLY, explain what Annaliese really is and all that, but there wasn’t enough detail. I got the “why”, but the “how” wasn’t explained enough. Annaliese is basically controlled by someone called “The Physician”, but we barely get any glimpse of him, what he does, and how he does it. How did all of this start? What kind of magic/power is behind all of this? What the hell is going on?! I wasn’t too happy with all the flashbacks and felt they weren’t clearly explained or depicted for a reader to get a complete picture of what is truly going on. There is also a lot of nonsense and frivolous stuff that happens that I couldn’t care less about.
Overall, Another Little Piece is interesting and unique. The horror/thriller aspect is by far the best part, and the thing that keeps the book going, but as for the characters and pacing, it was kind of blah and dragging for me. I’m also not a fan of the ending because it felt too HEA and lame, and there was also one part that I didn’t quite understand how it happened. I felt like the author just wanted to wrap everything up nicely, which kind of sucks because after everything that happened, I was hoping for a more omnious ending.
