Pregnancy Changes You…Or At Least, It Changed Me

June 26, 2013 On My Mind, Pregnancy 11

For those of you who don’t know, I’m a creature of habit. I like my daily routines and anything slightly outside the norm, although I do adapt, can cause me to feel uncomfortable and makes me long to get things back on track. I’m even more habitual when it comes to food, often eating the same thing for lunch or dinner for like a month and finding the dish tastes just as good on the 28th day as it did on the 1st day.

But, pregnancy changed me.

It’s an age-old Asian belief that when you’re pregnant, something in your blood changes (i.e. hormones) and your body basically becomes a different being. My mother would always tell me things like that and I never gave it a second thought until I realized my body and mind just aren’t what they used to be.

Some minor, but significant changes I’ve noticed about me include:

– I have eczema. The bane of my existence. My skin was never perfect, but it wasn’t until after I had BG1 that I developed eczema. Granted, the condition runs in my family, but I was lucky enough not to have it as a child, as my siblings did, so I thought I was in the clear. Who would’ve thought that after having BG1, my hands would be plagued with it. It got even worse after BG2 and nowadays I can’t even remember what my hands used to look like. Sigh…this is a true testament to the idea that pregnancy really does change your blood.

– I only like drinking room temp water. Sure, if I’m out or it’s an excruciatingly hot day, I’ll spring for the iced/cold water, but for the most part, I really don’t like drinking cold water like I used to.

– I like Coke now, instead of Pepsi. GASP!! It’s the age-old debate of which is better, and I was a Pepsi girl for the longest time. Coke just tasted funny to me. After I had BG2 though, I have a renewed preference for Coke and now Pepsi tastes weird to me.

– I crave rice dishes a lot more than noodle dishes now. I have always been a diehard noodle girl. I love me some Pho, Buon, Hu Tieu, etc. and before I would crave it like nobody’s business. Nowadays, while I still enjoy the occasional noodle dish, I find myself craving rice more often than not. I finally get what other Asians mean when they say they need rice in their diet, because it just feels so essential, and even plain rice tastes delicious to me now, when before I wouldn’t give it a second thought.

– I was pretty tough, stubborn, and hot-headed back in the day. Anger was the mood you’d most often find me in, but nowdays, I have relaxed and chilled out SO much, you’d hardly recognize me. Something about having kids makes me way more patient and just filled me with a love and fulfillment that I previously did not have.

I’m sure there a few more, but I can’t think of them right now.

Probably my biggest issue is the eczema, and I was hoping being pregnant with BG2 would change things up, but alas, that was not the case. Will it happen when I get pregnant again? What else about me will change? Who knows. Fingers crossed on the eczema thing!

So what about any of you ladies out there? Did you go through any changes from pre- to post-pregnancy?

Girl, you aren’t VN unless you drink Pepsi!! 🙂 no really, my changes would be room temp water & can’t stand heat at all.

Lol, ikr?! I was seriously in love with Pepsi & now I SO prefer Coke! Ugh! Whew! Glad I’m not the only one who likes room temp water. My hubbi thinks I’m weird.

OMG so many things changed with me. Like now, I get motion sickness really easy, when before I could go on all the spinny rides over and over. I now have an allergy to tomatoes that I never used to. I don’t like mayo now on sandwiches or anything, but can handle it in potato salad. I used to put mayo on everything before! And I also only like room temperature water. Actually most beverages unless it’s a beer or cocktail. Not that I won’t drink cold things, I just prefer things to be room temp. Great post!!
