1. If you had to choose three words to describe yourself, what would it be?
Creative, thoughtful, determined.
2. What was your inspiration for the Beachwood Bay series?
Honestly, Unbroken was inspired by Persuasion by Jane Austen. I wanted to write a book about first love that wouldn’t die, plus I’d always wanted to write a beach house summer book, so the two fit together perfectly! Beachwood Bay took on a life of its own, and I realized there were so many more stories to tell about Emerson and Juliet’s friends and family.
3. Which of the Beachwood Bay books was your favorite to write? The most difficult? The easiest?
Unbroken will always have a special place in my heart, because it was a big risk for me, but I really believed in the story and characters, and loved every minute of writing it. Unwrapped was the easiest, because it’s such a fun story — Lacey leapt off the page when I first wrote her, and knew she deserved a story all to herself! Unafraid is the most personal out of all of them, I really identified with Brit, and that made it both harder and easier in some ways.
4. What are some of your favorite books of all time? At the moment?
Ooooh… tough! At the moment, I love Sarah MacLean, Leigh Bardugo, Lauren Blakely, Cora Carmack, Sawyer Bennett… A mix of YA and NA and romance! Of all time… I love ‘Love Walked In’ by Marisa de los Santos, I re-read that book every year. And the Jenny Crusie books are a comfort-reading staple of mine.
5. What are you working on now?
Now I’m trying to take a little break! But 2014 will be busy: I have Unconditional coming out, and the next Cities of Love book, With Every Song, my new romance series.
6. What’s the best advice you can give to aspiring writers?
Don’t give up! Keep working, be open to learning new things and working on your craft, and don’t think your first draft has to be good, because I promise you, mine aren’t!
7. Do you have a favorite playlist for when your writing? For the Beachwood Bay series? For Cities of Love series?
I like background music that sets a warm mood, so Norah Jones, some Jamie Cullum, indie acoustic stuff like the Shins, Tegan and Sara, and Mumford and Sons. Certain songs inspire me with the lyrics, but when i’m writing, I like all my focus on the page.
