Project BG3: Week 15 – Stinky Formula

December 4, 2014 BG3, Project BG3 2

So it looks like the new formula we were trying, Similac Sensitive, wasn’t working out like I thought it would. I don’t think I mentioned this much, but for the past 6-8 weeks, she’s been having an issue with her stools. It’s basically borderline diarrhea. It’s not watery, but VERY wet, and she goes like six times a day, which isn’t normal for formula-fed babies. We’re thinking it’s because of her formula, so we switched her from Similac Advance to Sensitive for two weeks and things looked good for the first week, but it didn’t change during the second week. She’s not dehydrated or anything and is still active and playful, so I’m not too worried, but then again, all those bowel movements can’t be good for her system, can it? Plus, who knows if she’s even absorbing all the nutrients she needs with how much she’s pooping. She already hardly eats anything, so what little she actually takes in has to count.

Anyways, after talking to the doctor, we’re trying Similac Alimentum this week. It’s supposed to be a hypoallergenic formula where the milk proteins are further broken down and is supposed to be easier on a baby’s tummy. I don’t know if she really does have a milk allergy, I mean, there’s no other signs. She doesn’t have eczema, she’s not more irritable than she has been, and there isn’t the telltale sign of a red ring around the anus to suggest an allergy. It’s really just the diarrhea that’s my main concern.

Alimentum is one of those stinky formulas though. It seriously makes you want to gag, it smells so bad. I don’t know how babies can take it. It doesn’t smell good when she burps, either, haha. So yeah, we’re going to try this formula for a week or two and see how she does. The only problem is it’s CRAZY expensive. A small can, which for normal formula would be around $15, is actually double that, around $30. Sigh. But, if it helps her, it’s worth it.

This girl seriously loves munching on her hands! It’s a struggle getting them out of her mouth and keeping them away. I swear, if only she had that same determination to actually eat that she does for sucking on her hands, she’d make me worry less.

OMG, I’ve tried both of those formulas for my first kid and yes, the formula for the second one smells so bad. The burps used to make my sister gag all the time. I think it’s normal for their poop to change when you switch formula, hopefully that goes away soon.
And that formula is crazy expensive, it’s really not fair. With my second one, I decided to breastfeed for a year because I didn’t want to risk having to deal with all of those stomach/gas/acid reflux issues again.
I used to love that chair! Such a cutie 🙂

Every time I write one of these posts, I think of you bc I know you can relate. *hugs* I think we’ve gotten used to the smell of the formula in the can, but it still stinks when she burps, lol. I wish I could’ve done breastfeeding, maybe that would’ve worked better for her.
