Rising star Zack Grantham has been stuck in a downward spiral of grief ever since the car accident that left him a single dad and put his career on hold. Back on the road with the Carolina Cold Fury and still crippled by emotional baggage, he’s in need of some serious help with his son. But while the nerdy new nanny wins his son’s heart, Zack isn’t sure he’s ready for a woman’s touch—even after getting a glimpse of the killer curves she’s hiding under those baggy clothes.
Kate Francis usually keeps men like Zack at a distance. Though his athlete’s body is honed to perfection, he refuses to move on with his life—and besides, he’s her boss. Still, the sparks between them are undeniable, tempting Kate to turn their professional relationship into a personal one. But before she makes a power play for Zack’s wounded heart, Kate will have to open him up again and show him that love is worth the fight.

Look what you do to me, Sawyer! Nowadays it’s hard to find something that will actually keep me up at night, but Zack did. I couldn’t put this book down. Sawyer always gets me with her books and I’ve yet to read one that I haven’t loved, but it seems like they get better and better. Zack was everything I was expecting and more. I loved revisiting my favorite hockey players and getting to know a couple of new ones. Zack and Kate were an amazing couple that connected on so many levels. It was easy to see how they fit together. Kate was that breath of fresh air that Zack so desperately needed and I loved watching them fall in love. One thing I really loved, and surprised me in a good way, was the moment Zack and Kate first meet. I was totally expecting some other, typical reaction, and I got something different and highly amusing. I liked that Sawyer didn’t go the normal route and because of that I got to see the gradual fall from acquaintance, to friends, to lovers.
Hands down, the best part of this book, and why I gave it 5 stars, was Kate. She may very well be my favorite character that Sawyer has created and she’s definitely high on the list of my favorites overall. I connected to her right away and fell in love with her just as quickly. She’s so grounded, caring, smart, and fun. I could think of a hundred adjectives for this girl and each new thing I learned about her made me love her more. She’s so selfless and understanding. I also appreciated how mature and blunt she was. Not to mention, she was hilarious and appropriately “adorkable”. Why can’t I have a friend like this in real life?
Zack, on the other hand, took a bit of warming up to, which I totally expected. He acted in exactly the way I was expecting, save for one really jerk move, and even though there were moments where I wouldn’t be nearly as patient as Kate, I still sympathized with him as best I could. Above all, Zack was a good guy and never one to beat around the bush. He’s such a good father and despite never marrying Gina, he gave as much of his body, mind, and soul to her as he could. And after the tragedy of losing your longtime girlfriend, mother of your child, how can you not be broken? Sawyer did an excellent job at conveying all the emotions someone feels when they think they caused the death of a loved one. All that guilt, pain, and sorrow. My heart went out to Zack so many times. While some would say the timeline for his mourning was way to quick, and I was hesitant at first, I have to say, no one can judge how a person grieves and what they do to help themselves move on. When someone is ready, they’re ready.
We also get to meet Ryker in this book, the next Cold Fury player we will read about and I honestly can’t wait to learn more about him. I was seriously hoping for a sneak peek at the end, which I usually don’t read, but I didn’t want to leave this world just yet. I am so in love with this series. You get sports. You get angst. You get sexy times. And you get it all in a well-written storyline that flows and keeps you entertained. What else do you need? Read this book now!
